In an idea that came to fruition in the beginning of 2010 in Hong Kong, POW WOW was created as an exhibition of creative talents which stressed more so the background and development of art. As opposed to the often seen focus on the finished product, POW WOW set forth in giving the public access to artists in their element as they went to work on their respective pieces. In this series, we take a look at POW WOW 2011 which took place in founder Jasper Wong’s native Hawai’i and the comprehensive process that surrounded the event. While Hawai’i has had its fair share of creative output, POW WOW has represented the island’s most concentrated effort to help push and build the local artistic community.

Street Artist Ben Eine "Greatest"
UK based artist EINE spent the month canvasing San Francisco with his stylized lettering. Utilizing the urban landscape of ‘the city’, EINE has impressed with the shear scale of his work. Offering San Franciscan’s simple phrases or words such as “happiness” – his work lets you draw from your own bank of mental imagery. This public execution of street art aimed to offer viewers a more participatory role in the observation and evaluation of artistic creation.

Faith47
Faith47 is a self-taught artist who draws inspiration from her own intuitive political and existential questions. Her art takes on the form of metaphor. Both abstract and definitive in meaning, plucking at our heartstrings as she paints.
Amazing artist. Inspiraţional.

Revok "On The Run"

Brush-Less Portraits
One look at David Walker's beautiful brush-less portraits, and you probably wouldn't believe me if I told you he only started painting three years ago. For two of those years, he only painted in black, white, and pink because it was cheaper and allowed him to concentrate on his subjects more. Then, he came across a box of random colored paint that had been buried in the studio and he started exploring with as many colors as he could, all at once. "It just felt right at the time and it’s been a lot of fun," he says.
Walker doesn't use brushes because he wants the pieces to raise questions about graffiti and traditional painting. "People are normally quite surprised the work is made from spray paint and I think many are also surprised they actually like the work when its outside on a wall; suddenly they have connected with a scene that they previously had no time for at all."
As for the faces that he paints, he doesn't know them all. "I like that they’ve never met me and they don’t know they’re being painted," he explains. "I use found photography, old magazines, the web, snapshots, anything that’s not staged by me. The fact that the subjects are unknown also allows people to make up there own narrative to the portraits."

Converse paints the walls of British towns
Converse paints the walls of British towns to promote its recent collaboration with popular and emerging musicians. The brand is known for its projects focused on celebrating arts and music culture, and this summer and fall it released several tracks by GB and U.S. entertainers. Recently, the footwear company has partnered with Monorex, a group of graffiti-inspired visual artists, to pay tribute to influential musicians by promoting indie music genres with street art.

Poster Boy “Gone Fishin”
Early last year, Poster Boy caused a big stir when he assumed the position of MoMA staff and re-appropriated a large scale campaign based on 57 works of popular art. The vinyls proliferated Brooklyn’s Atlantic-Pacific subway station and was part of an initiative organized by Doug Jaeger, a marketing executive who worked together with MoMA on the campaign. With a lot of finger-pointing and controversy, eventually Jaeger’s HappyCorp agency was dismissed.
